You might have noticed that we have certification on 99% of our timber products. It’s important to us that our customers are getting timber from sustainable sources, to ensure wood can be used for many years to come.
When you buy timber from Snows, you can request a Chain of Custody. Chain of Custody is a mechanism for tracking timber-based products from the forest to the end user ensuring material is from sustainable, legal sources.
You will see two certifications on our products from either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) or the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).
What do the FSC and PEFC do?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was formed in Toronto in 1993 with Greenpeace and the WWF being 2 of its founding members. At the last count, there were 187 million Hectares of FSC certified forests across 81 countries.
117 countries operate FSC Chain of Custody with a total of 30,247 certificates.
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) was founded in 1999 by national organisations from eleven countries and are now the world’s largest forest certification system. Over 300 Million hectares or two third of the worlds certified forests are PEFC across 36 countries.
70 countries operate PEFC Chain of Custody with a total of 11,503 certificates.
Why is chain of custody so important?
Timber is a natural product and to reach the standards needed for construction, it must go through the full growing process to improve strength. Chain of Custody is so important to the Timber and Construction Industry to make sure forests are responsibility managed to ensure quality and the supply of wood materials lasts in the long term.
